Why I Started MJW Strategic Communications…It’s my Ikigai
Over 30 years ago I stepped into the offices of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) in Washington, DC for my first day of work. While going through new employee orientation, I did something no one had ever asked me to do before…raise my right hand and take the oath that I would protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. No other employees in my previous work life ever came close to asking me to do something like that. At that point, my new job suddenly took on a whole new meaning to me. This wasn’t just a job…it was a commitment like no other I’ve made. And I embraced it with vigor.

Now that I have traversed the offices of multiple departments and agencies over a 33-year period and have officially retired from federal service, I’m not one to sit back and allow boredom to sneak into my life. Afterall, in those 30+ years working in communication I found what is known as my “Ikigai,” and I’m not about to put it to bed…not just yet. In Japanese, Ikigai refers to the intersection of passion, talent, purpose, and fulfillment. It’s about doing what you love, what you’re good at, and what the world needs, all while being rewarded for it. For me, this work is that intersection. It’s not just about communication consulting; it’s about making a real, lasting impact by empowering organizations to communicate with clarity and purpose.
As I embrace my “Ikigai,” and look for ways to continue the path I’ve been on for years, I’m excited to announce the launch of MJW Strategic Communications. From the moment I swore that oath to uphold the Constitution on day one of my career, I’ve been deeply committed to serving others. Now, with a wealth of experience in federal leadership—shaping strategic communications, workforce engagement, and crisis management—I’m stepping into this new chapter with a mission to help organizations thrive through tailored communication strategies.
The Foundation of My Journey
Throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege of working with impactful agencies like the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the National Weather Service, and like I mentioned above, the EEOC. In these roles, I saw firsthand the power of communication to drive change—whether enhancing internal employee engagement, managing public crises, or navigating complex regulations.
Effective communication is about more than sending messages; it’s about creating strategies that lead to measurable success. Whether leading workforce engagement at CISA or managing crisis communication during national disasters at FEMA, I saw how a strong communication strategy could transform organizations. Yet, I also know that no two organizations are the same. Tailoring communication to meet unique needs is critical.
At MJW Strategic Communications, my goal as a consultant is to help organizations develop customized strategies that enhance internal culture, safeguard reputations, and navigate public affairs. Whether through crisis communication, employee engagement, or public policy, I’m here to help organizations communicate with purpose and impact.
Looking Ahead with Purpose
As I embark on this new venture, I’m excited to continue making a difference. MJW Strategic Communications is my way of helping organizations communicate more effectively, adapt to change, and ultimately succeed. I invite you to join me on this journey and explore how we can work together to craft strategies that elevate your organization.
